Citizen Kane

In 1941 I wrote, directed, and produced Citizen Kane, a drama centered on the rise and fall of a publishing magnate named Charles Foster Kane. A subject matter which got me in more than a bit of hot water with Mr. William Randoplh Hearst, but that's a story for another time.

In this project, I rejected a traditional linear, chronological narrative. Instead, I told the story entirely in flashbacks using the points of view of various imperfect characters that served as unreliable narrators. Each narrator recounts a different part of Kane's life, with each story overlapping another.

The film depicts Kane as an enigma, a complicated man who leaves viewers with more questions than answers. The film's repetitions of events compel the audience to analyze and wonder why Kane's life happened the way that it did, under the pretext of finding out what "Rosebud" means.
